GARNER Arts Center will launch two new exhibitions on Saturday, July 11, showcasing artists whose work explores the world through remarkably different perspectives, from the quiet beauty of the Hudson Valley landscape to sharp social commentary rooted in satire.
Both exhibitions open with a public reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 11 and remain on view through August 16 in Building 35 Gallery at GARNER Arts Center.
One exhibition, Meditations and Reflections at Rockland Lake, 2011-2026, features photographs by Richard Alan Fox, whose artistic practice has spanned more than six decades. Drawn from an ongoing 15-year photographic study of Rockland Lake and Hook Mountain, the exhibition captures changing seasons, shifting light and reflective landscapes that encourage viewers to slow down and observe the natural world with renewed attention.
Running alongside Fox's exhibition is The Rake's Progress, a new body of work by nationally and internationally recognized artist Brett DePalma. Through surreal imagery and sardonic satire, DePalma examines contemporary society, using painting to challenge assumptions and explore themes of power, psychology and the human condition.
DePalma, a National Endowment for the Arts award recipient, has exhibited internationally and taught at both Princeton University and the School of Visual Arts. His work is represented in major collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Smithsonian Institution.
Together, the two exhibitions offer visitors distinctly different artistic experiences, one grounded in quiet contemplation of the natural landscape and the other in provocative social critique.
School and community groups are invited to schedule guided tours with the artists or curator during the exhibitions' run.
The opening reception takes place Saturday, July 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. Both exhibitions remain on view through August 16. Gallery hours are Thursdays from 4 to 8 p.m., Fridays from 2 to 5 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m.
