This September, in honor of Self-Care Awareness Month, the Rockland Behavioral Health Response Team (BHRT) is encouraging residents to take small, meaningful steps to care for their mental health. Self-care is more than a trend; it’s a vital part of emotional well-being, especially during times of change or stress.
Using guidance from the National Institute of Mental Health, BHRT is sharing simple, practical strategies that can make a big difference in daily life.
7 Self-Care Tips to Support Mental Health
1. Get active - Physical movement can improve your mood and energy levels, even if it’s simply a daily walk.
2. Prioritize sleep and nutrition - Aim for regular meals, hydration, and a consistent bedtime routine to support brain and body health.
3. Take breaks from screens - Power down devices at least an hour before bed to help your body wind down.
4. Practice relaxation techniques - Deep breathing, stretching, or short mindfulness exercises can help reduce anxiety.
5. Write it down - Journaling your thoughts or feelings helps you process stress and stay grounded.
6. Stay connected - Reaching out to a friend or loved one can reduce feelings of isolation.
7. Set boundaries - It's okay to say no and carve out time for yourself when you need it.
A Message from BHRT
“Self-care is one of the most important tools we have to protect our mental health,” said Tim Egan, Executive Director of BHRT and Rockland Paramedic Services. “These practices are simple, but powerful. Even small changes can help people feel more in control and supported.”
How to Get Involved
Rockland BHRT invites the community to join the conversation this September by following along on social media and committing to one self-care habit for the month. Share your progress using #SelfCareSeptember and encourage others to do the same.
