Westchester Elder Law Attorney Sara E. Meyers to Shed Light on Financial Elder Abuse and Senior Scams
On Wednesday, June 28, Westchester County elder law attorney Sara E. Meyers, Esq. of Enea, Scanlan & Sirignano, LLP, with offices in White Plains and Somers, N.Y., will present “Protecting Yourself and Your Loved Ones from Financial Elder Abuse and Senior Scams” as part of the firm’s 2023 Lunch & Learn Series. The free educational program is open to the public – though space is limited.
According to the National Council on Aging, financial scams targeting seniors have become so prevalent that they’re often referred to as “the crime of the 21st century.” Ms. Meyers’ program, held from noon to 1:30pm at the firm’s White Plains location, covers key signs of financial and personal elder abuse, typical scams that are targeted toward the senior population as well as the important estate planning documents to help protect against financial abuse as one ages.
Those interested are encouraged to register early by calling 914-948-1500 to reserve their spot. A light lunch and refreshments are included.
“Education is the key to preventing the devastating effects of financial elder abuse and senior scams,” said Ms. Meyers, a member at the firm who, along with managing member Anthony J. Enea, has been certified as an elder law attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation as accredited by the American Bar Association. “By understanding the risk factors and warning signs, we can empower ourselves and safeguard our loved ones' financial well-being – ensuring their dignity and security remain intact. Additionally, implementing estate planning documents such as Power of Attorney, Health Care Proxy, and HIPAA Form can provide an added layer of protection against financial exploitation.”
Held on the last Wednesday of each month, Lunch & Learn programs shed light on a variety of important elder law and estate planning topics. Future programs include:
September 27 – LLCs: The Pros, Cons and Estate Planning: For some, an LLC can be a useful tool to pass assets down to loved ones while avoiding or minimizing estate taxes. Discover if an LLC may be right for your estate planning needs as well as how they are used to reduce the risk of personal liability with rental properties. Presentation by Anthony J. Enea, Esq. & Michael P. Enea, Esq.
October 25 – Understanding the Implications of Gray Divorce: A divorce later in life often adds a level of complexity to the estate and tax plan process. Understand what potential complications may arise and how to address them – from division of assets and tax issues to estate and long-term care planning. Presented by Lauren C. Enea, Esq.
November 29 – Special Needs Planning for Children and Grandchildren with Disabilities: Ensure the future care and well-being of your child or grandchild with special needs using these estate planning strategies. This program will cover the three basic types of special needs trusts (also known as supplemental needs trusts), general drafting considerations and the newest type of special needs trust – the sole benefits trust. Presented by Sara E. Meyers, Esq. & Lauren C. Enea, Esq.
