IT’S RECRUITMENT SEASON AT LEADERSHIP ROCKLAND!

“I’ve lived in Rockland County all my life,” says Morgan Strand, the Teen Services Specialist at Nyack Library known as “Miss Morgan” to many of the area’s young people. “I didn’t think there was anything new I could learn about our little corner of the lower Hudson Valley. Then I joined the 2018 class of Leadership Rockland, and everything changed.”

Four years later, Strand is now chair of the Alumni and Recruitment Committee for Leadership Rockland, a leadership training program that has over the last three decades graduated more than 700 leaders in myriad fields and from every town and village in Rockland County—from mayors and school board members to nonprofit executives, civic leaders, small business owners and more.

The group is recruiting for its 2022-2023 class, and Strand wants others to experience the networking, camaraderie, and deep knowledge of the county’s rich offerings—and of its many diverse communities. “This program gives you a great opportunity to see the inner workings of Rockland County while empowering you to become a better leader,” Strand says. “I’ve grown so much from my experience and feel confident to put myself out there more. Being able to make an impact in our community is a wonderful feeling."

Business and estate planning attorney Robert Pitkofsky, another graduate of the program, says that one of his first tasks upon starting his law practice in Rockland County was to apply for Leadership Rockland. “Rockland County is a complex and close-knit community that really is one big town -- and I feel that it is essential for our business, not-for-profit, and government leaders to understand the who, the how and the why of what makes this community tick. Leadership Rockland exposes our leaders to these challenges head-on, and provides the tools necessary to engage with the debate and shape our county's future.”

Over 11 sessions, presenters from across the county engage participants in learning, exercises, and purposeful discussions about health care, emergency services and law enforcement, multiculturalism and social justice, environmental impacts, education and economic development, arts, media and culture, and the history of Rockland County. “Making an Impact Day” pulls it all together as participants determine how they will help further growth, cross-sector collaboration, and positive change in our county and the greater Hudson Valley.

“As we kick off another exciting recruitment season, we invite all current or emerging leaders to apply to the program,” says Leadership Rockland Board Chair Lizanne Fiorentino. “We are always eagerly searching for individuals who reflect our county’s diversity and who not only become better informed about Rockland County but to take that knowledge and enthusiasm back to their communities and organizations.”
