The Associated College Press (ACP) named 12 student-produced collegiate magazines as the “best of the best” last fall. Twenty-four magazines produced at both four-year and two-year institutions representing 17 states made it to the finals; Rockland Community College’s literary arts publication Impulse 2021 received one of the 12 Pacemaker awards.

Through education training and recognition programs for members, the ACP promotes the standards and ethics of good journalism as accepted and practiced by print, broadcast and electronic media in the United States. “The Pacemaker is the association’s preeminent award,” executive director Laura Widmer said. “ACP is honored to recognize the best of the best.”

Gary Lundgren, ACP associate director and coordinator of the Pacemaker competition, noted that the quality of the winning collegiate magazines rivals those produced by professionals. “The creativity displayed in the literary arts magazines is incredible — the unique formats and creative designs make the magazines themselves a work of art,” he said.

Impulse is RCC’s annually printed literary and visual arts magazine that features student authors, artists, designers, and photographer. The student magazine club is overseen by co-advisors Kris Dougherty and Eileen MacAvery Kane.

“I am so proud of our Impulse Club and thrilled that Impulse 2021 won an ACP Award,” said RCC Associate Professor and Impulse Co-Advisor Eileen MacAvery Kane. “This is the culmination of a lot of work by so many of our talented students.”

Impulse magazine is a platform for “meaningful artwork, prose and poetry,” said Editor Emiline V. Torrens. “In Impulse 2021, we juxtaposed the romantic illustration of flora and fauna with that of the abstract, surreal and postmodern; somber and resonant poesy with that of philosophical prose. The result was a true collaboration between RCC writers, artists, designers, and photographers.”
