Catholic Charities Community Services of Rockland will host the annual Blessing of the Soil on Saturday, May 2nd at their location in Haverstraw at 78 Hudson Avenue, from noon until 1:30 pm. In addition to the Monsignor blessing the garden soil for this year’s growing season, there will be activities for the children and refreshments for all. The theme, “From Seed to Supper,” symbolizes the importance of providing fresh vegetables for a healthier lifestyle to our neighbors in need.

CCCSR has hosted this special community event since 2010 after transforming their side lawn with assistance from Rockland County's Cornell Cooperative Education Master Gardener program, into a productive garden that not only enabled the organization to save money on lawn maintenance but increased their ability to provide fresh produce.

The CCCSR food pantry also receives fresh fruits and vegetables each week from Stokes Farm in nearby Old Tappan. Staff and volunteers oversee the garden, which is also home to one of the only greenhouses on the site of a food pantry in the northeast.

Catholic Charities Community Services, The Warm Heart of Rockland, provides services to people of all ages, from every religion, race, and ethnic group from all over the County. The organization’s focus is to provide life necessities, including food, shelter, and other emergency assistance to those in need. The compassionate and professional staff speak English, Spanish, French and Creole. More information can be found at www.ccrockland.org or by calling (845) 942-5791.
