Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rockland County (CCE Rockland) invites the community to its 6th Annual Sustainability Walk and Fair on Sunday, October 4, at Congers Lake from 10 AM – 2 PM. The family-friendly event brings together environmental education, hands-on activities, community organizations and local businesses for a day focused on sustainability and stewardship.

This year's walk will take place alongside the lake and will feature 12 informational stations where participants can learn about environmental topics and features of the Congers Lake ecosystem, including aquatic birds, invasive species, ticks and the history of Congers Lake and more.

Families can enjoy a scavenger hunt for children, nature-based crafts and a guided activity through which Scouts can work toward earning a badge. Environmental nonprofits and local vendors will also be on hand, and the V-Fib coffee truck will be at the event.

Visitors will have an opportunity to learn more about CCE Rockland and the services it provides throughout the community. Programs include youth programming; a horticulture lab that can help diagnose certain plant problems and provide research-based guidance about yards and gardens; stormwater channel mapping and other initiatives that support water quality and drinking water; and energy advisory services. Attendees can speak with an energy expert about ways to make their homes more energy efficient and learn about relevant programs and resources, including opportunities available through NYSERDA.

Many of CCE Rockland's horticulture and educational efforts are supported by dedicated Master Gardener volunteers, who bring extensive knowledge of gardening practices and research-based horticulture information to the community.

The event will also recognize environmental leadership in the community with awards honoring one organization, one individual and one youth. Award recipients will be announced soon.

The Sustainability Walk and Fair is sponsored by Veolia and the Town of Clarkstown. Additional sponsors are currently being sought to help support the event and its environmental education activities.

The event will be held rain or shine and is wheelchair and stroller accessible. In the event of rain, all activities and informational stations will be moved indoors to the Congers Community Center.
