Penguin Rep Theatre, under the leadership of founding Artistic Director Joe Brancato and Executive Director Andrew M. Horn, continues its 48th season with the world premiere of Son of Zeus, written and performed by Jimmy Georgiades. Performances run July 11 through July 27 at Penguin’s intimate barn-turned-theatre in historic Stony Point, New York.
Directed by playwright, lyricist, and actress Gretchen Cryer (I’m Getting My Act Together and Taking it on the Road, The Last Sweet Days of Isaac), Son of Zeus takes audiences to Hell’s Kitchen, where the Greek American son of a single mother who worked as a belly dancer shares his deeply personal story.
Described by Mr. Brancato as “A Bronx Tale meets Zorba the Greek,” the play is a captivating story about family lost, family found, and the challenges of living up to – or letting go of – expectations.
The performances of mainstage productions are scheduled at Penguin Rep Theatre, a repurposed hay barn, located at 7 Crickettown Road, Stony Point, NY. “The converted barn, circa 1880, has never been more inviting” (The New York Times). Says Mr. Horn, “It’s theatre so close you can feel it, with comfortable upholstered seats and no seat more than 30 feet from the stage.” The theatre is air conditioned, handicapped accessible, and has plenty of free parking.
Performances will take place: Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m., select Friday matinees at 2:00 p.m., select Friday evenings at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday matinees at 2:00 p.m.
Tickets are $52, with discounts available for groups of 10 or more and young people (30 and under). Season subscribers receive preferred seating, access to special events, and restaurant discounts. Son of Zeus will also be featured as part of Cheap Thrills Fridays on July 11 and Posa Posa Pizza Fridays on July 25.
