Strawtown Studio, an award-winning Hudson Valley nonprofit, is celebrating 20 years of inspiring creativity and nature connection with a special event, Inspiring the Way Forward. The celebration will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 7-10 p.m. at The DyeWorks Gallery in the GARNER Historic District in Garnerville, NY.
This milestone event will highlight two decades of impact while supporting Strawtown's mission to engage young people with the outdoors through hands-on learning adventures rooted in nature, art, and science. Strawtown creates experiences that foster self-discovery and a deeper sense of belonging in a shared community that values caretaking of the Earth.
The organization’s leadership is also recognized for its advocacy for the rivers and tributaries of the lower Hudson Valley. Water protection has been a central focus of their educational programs, inspiring a sense of responsibility and connection to the natural world in the communities they serve.
"For 20 years, we have empowered children with a greater sense of interconnectedness, something that is more important than ever for their wellbeing in today’s world,” said Laurie Seeman, Founder and Director of Strawtown Studio. "This event is a celebration of where we've been and a launchpad for where we're going. We invite our community to help us expand our reach, bringing the magic of Strawtown to even more children, families, and educators."
A Night of Inspiration and Community
Actor and environmental advocate Kevin Kilner ("A Cinderella Story," "House of Cards") will serve as Master of Ceremonies. The evening will feature special guest speaker Karenna Gore, Founder and Executive Director of the Center for Earth Ethics at Union Theological Seminary in NYC. A visionary leader, Karenna grew up surrounded by the climate advocacy of her father, former Vice President Al Gore. At Union, she pioneered a new approach to climate action — reframing it as a moral issue and partnering with faith-based leaders and communities worldwide. She brings a unique perspective that deeply resonates with Strawtown's commitment to future-focused action for and with our youth.
Guests will also hear from Dr. Stephen Cowan, a holistic developmental pediatrician and author of Fire Child, Water Child. He will speak about the challenges children face in today’s rapidly changing world and the importance of nature-based learning in child development.
Attendees will experience Strawtown’s interactive nature-art installations, live music from Strawtown alumni and DJ Morgana, and refreshments by Mimi’s Plate. The evening will bring together board members, staff, alumni, parents, artists, educators, environmental leaders, and community members. All are welcome to attend!
Join Us in Creating the Future
Inspiring the Way Forward marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Strawtown. With a three-year strategic plan in the works, the organization is expanding its role as a well-spring of support and resources for educators, artists, and community leaders. This will include watershed education curriculum modeled on their years of advocacy and stewardship for the lower Hudson River and tributaries.
Sponsorships range from $400 to $5,000, offering benefits such as event tickets, digital and program recognition, and private nature-art experiences. Individual tickets are $125, and those unable to attend can support the organization as "Candle Lighters", with donations recognized during the birthday cake celebration.
