BRIDGES, Rockland’s resource and advocacy agency for individuals with disabilities, will host its annual dinner, “In My Shoes,” on Thursday, May 1st from 6 – 9 pm at the scenic Bear Mountain Inn. The evening is dedicated to celebrating the significance of Universal Design.

According to the Centre for Universal Design: Universal Design (UD) is the design and composition of an environment so that it can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability. An environment should be designed to meet the needs of all people who wish to use it. This is not a special requirement for the benefit of only a minority of the population. It is a fundamental condition of good design.

By creating an environment that is accessible, convenient and easy to use, everyone benefits. Considering the diverse needs and abilities of all who might use the space from the start and throughout the design process, universal design helps create an environment that everyone can enjoy regardless of whether the location is a home, office, school or medical facility. BRIDGES is focusing its Universal Design concept on housing, making this year’s dinner awardees particularly special. The event will celebrate individuals who have helped and continue to make housing accessible to the Rockland community.

“Our annual dinner is not just an event; it's a powerful expression of what we can achieve together in creating a society that values each person's potential. We are excited to share an evening that not only honors our remarkable awardees but also brings our community together to support a cause that touches so many lives,” stated Carlos Martinez, Executive Director of BRIDGES.

This year's dinner will highlight those who work tirelessly on behalf of others to ensure that they have access to many of the things that people take for granted. It will also be an evening of reflection, celebration, and empowerment, with guests enjoying fine dining, and informative presentations in the stunning setting of Bear Mountain Inn.

The "In My Shoes" Gala will honor three distinguished awardees:

  • Access Award: Robert Bernstein, from BILD Architect, will be recognized for his dedication to creating accessible spaces that enhance mobility and independence.
